Interpretation and Translation Services
Interpreters must be able to utilize simultaneous, consecutive, and sight interpretation accurately and consistently. They will provide accurate renditions of complex, colloquial, and formal speech, conveying details and nuances in a law enforcement training environment. Training sessions may last up to 10 hours per day. May also require interpreting at cultural events on evenings and weekends. May require emergency, on-call interpreting services. Will require 4+ weeks of travel.
Translators must provide accurate and thorough written translations from English to a foreign language listed below, or vice versa. Documents will include legal, law enforcement, and training materials. No travel required.
REQUIRED SKILLS and EXPERIENCE:
Professional level of proficiency in spoken and written English and at least one of the following foreign languages:
French
Thai
Spanish
Albanian/Romanian
Magyar
Ukrainian
Croatian
Serbo-Croatian
Portuguese
Vietnamese
Bahasa Indonesian
Cambodian
Burmese
Turkish
Macedonian
ADDITIONAL REQUIRED SKILLS and EXPERIENCE:
US citizen or lawfully admitted into the US for permanent residence required for interpreters.
Either certified or have 1 year experience interpreting in a judicial environment required. Federal, State, National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT), or Judiciary Interpreters and Translators Certification Examination (JITCE) are accepted certifications.
Level 3+ (Professional Performance Plus) from Interagency Language Roundtable or Advanced (A), Superior (S), or High (H) rating from an acceptable Private Language Testing Institution in speaking, listening, reading, and writing within the last 5 years required (see application for full list of acceptable sources).
Highly proficient in both English and the foreign language vocabularies typically used in formal, consultative, and casual modes of communication in justice system contexts, including colloquial slang, idiosyncratic slang, and regionalisms.
Knowledge of specialized vocabulary (terminology) in both English and the foreign language related to legal and criminal justice system terminology and immigration procedures, particularly with regard to terminology typically used in Immigration Court hearings.
Able to speak English and the foreign language fluently, including high to low levels of language register, regional colloquialisms and slang expressions, and do so with clear and intelligible pronunciation.
Adept at simultaneous, consecutive interpretation, and sight translation.
Able to perform full and complete interpretation (everything is interpreted using a combination of consecutive and simultaneous modes of interpretation) that is factually and conceptually accurate without changes, omissions, or additions.
Able to preserve the tone and emotional level of the speaker, as well as manage the delivery, speed and length of the statement (projection, pace and pausing) of the speaker.
Able to maintain appropriate speed and projection while rendering interpretation, and request and incorporate clarification of speaker’s statements only when justified.

Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in foreign language, business, law enforcement, or related field
