ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:
Responsible for the initial training and ongoing maintenance and development of all school bus driver and monitor skills relating to the safety of all students transported and safe driving practices. Ensure driver/monitor compliance with federal, state and local regulations and district policies. Maintain required documentation for audits in compliance with district, state and federal requirements. Perform or review all on-site investigations of accidents/incidents involving WPS school bus drivers and/or monitors. Ensure compliance with policies related to certification of drivers and monitors, safe driving skills, customer service and responsiveness. Professionally communicate with students, parents, school administrators, staff and others to direct and convey expectations.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist Transportation Coordinator and Director of Transportation in the management of the WPS school bus operations office functions.
2. Assist in interviews, screening and selection of new drivers and monitors.
3. Develop and implement orientation program for new drivers and monitors.
4. Conduct training programs regarding safety, defensive driving, appropriate use of radio, crash reporting and procedures, onboard accident procedures, student management, first aid, CPR, EPI pen administration, CPI, etc.
5. Monitor pre and post trip safety inspection and reports to ensure compliance with laws, regulations and policies.
6. Perform onboard evaluations of new drivers and monitors during probationary period and all others per contractual requirements.
7. Assist drivers and monitors to develop an appropriate emergency evacuation plan for each trip and student.
8. Respond to school bus crashes and accidents. Conduct crash and accident investigations with report and recommendation regarding chargeable and preventable crashes and accidents. Ensure driver compliance with post-accident procedures, including testing and prompt filing of reports.
9. Provide retraining as necessary for drivers and monitors.
10. Evaluate driver requests regarding route timing and recommend appropriate action, if any.
11. Investigate significant discrepancies between actual and expected route times using all available tools, including personal observation and use of technology.
12. Provide assistance and training to drivers and monitors on student passenger management and other safety related issues.
13. Coordinate student safety plans with schools and programs to improve student ride experience for all passengers on the trip.
14. Evaluate route time performance to measure actual versus expected time to complete routes safely.
15. Investigate customer service complaints relative to safety issues and recommend appropriate corrective action.
16. Act as fill-in driver as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. 1 year of experience.
3. Valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
4. Valid CDL with passenger and “S” endorsement.
5. Valid Massachusetts school bus operator’s certificate.
6. Valid Massachusetts school bus operator training license.
7. Certification as Trainer for First Aid, CPR and CPI
(Must possess within six months of appointment to the
position of Assistant Transportation Coordinator).
8. Flexible and capable of handling emergencies using sound judgement.
9. Awareness and sensitivity for the unique challenges associated with transporting children with special needs.
10. Knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations regarding safety issues.
11. Positive attitude, professional and friendly demeanor.
12. Strong communication and customer service skills.
13. Strong organizational skills.
14. Must be detail oriented.
15. Demonstrated experience supporting students with special needs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Ability to speak Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Albanian, or an African Language.
WORK YEAR: 52 week position / 40 hours weekly with overtime (6 to 8 hours/weekly)
WORK DAY: 8 hours/daily
