Deputy Director, Legal Coordination - Local 32BJ SEIU - New York, NY
The Contracts and Grievance Center (CGC) of SEIU Local 32BJ, is looking for a responsible and dedicated attorney to manage the legal operation of CGC’s representation of members in the grievance arbitration process. SEIU 32BJ is one of the nation’s largest and most dynamic labor unions, with over 145,000 members in the property services industry throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, DC, Florida, Massachusetts and Virginia. Components of the position include:
Arbitration Process
Supervision and development of arbitration attorneys
Strategically managing the arbitration docket
Limited arbitration caseload
Coordination with the union’s legal department on arbitration cases and related matters such as labor board issues
Grievance Operations
Coordination with Deputy Director for Operations on support for Grievance Representatives including –
Support on contract interpretation questions and complex cases
Supervision of discrimination claim investigation process
Training for grievance staff on contract interpretation
Supporting the department in quality grievance handling
Field Operations
Coordination with union officers and field representation on institutionally significant contract enforcement issues.
Candidates must be interested in representing working class individuals, enjoy advocating on a daily basis, and have a significant interest in or prior experience in the labor movement. We are looking for applicants with 8 to 10 years of attorney and relevant management experience. Bilingual (Spanish, Polish or Albanian) is a plus.
This position is based in Local 32BJ’s headquarters in NYC, but some travel is necessary to other locations on the East Coast. We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible.
