Advisor, CAPS (Career, Academic and Personal Success) - Quinsigamond Community College - Worcester, MA

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic Advisors provide students with assistance in career and academic planning which includes selecting appropriate courses applicable to their major program of study, interpreting assessment scores to ensure accurate placement, and making referrals to other college services as needed. The QCC Developmental Advising Model provides an overall philosophy, framework, and specific student indicators, which guide the work of all QCC College Academic Advisors.


The Advisor provides comprehensive career and academic planning services to QCC students year-round. Promotes, utilizes and implements the QCC Developmental Advising Model, including specific student indicators. Provides specialized advising services to identified student populations such as academic dismissal, financial aid suspension, Workforce Training Initiatives (TOP, trade), probation, dual enrollment and 12th-year, honors, and other student groups.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Reports to the Director of Career and Academic Planning.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Supervises support personnel as assigned.


Requirements:


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform all functions related to career and academic planning in the Academic Advising Center.

2. Provide specialized CAPS services such as early alert outreach and advising to identified student populations, including the College’s early alert software (Starfish).

3. Conduct individual and group advising presentations to identified populations.

4. Proactively contact students via all outreach methods to set up appointments for CAPS advising throughout the academic year and during the summer.

5. Deliver career and academic planning services to students including but not limited to assisting students in their formation of short and long-term academic and career goals; discussing student strengths and barriers as related to academic success; assisting in career research information and formation of educational plan; interpreting student placement scores for proper course placement; registering students for courses and/or teach students how to self-register for courses, including use of degree audit.

6. Demonstrate an understanding and promote use of the QCC Developmental Advising Model.

7. Deliver online and web-based advising services to students in the Advising Office and other designated locations and campuses including responding to student email inquiries; documenting email inquiries and responses in the Advisor Notes; follow-up on Starfish flags, kudos, referrals and To-Do’s; referrals to appropriate departments, and course registrations.

8. Serve as primary contact and liaison for designated academic School, including the participation in School meetings.

9. Follow and articulate policies and procedures of the advising centers and the college, including Placement Test policy, FERPA and other related policies and guidelines. Interpret policies for students and college community.

10. Assist students in the preparation of required applications, registration forms, and petitions as required by college policy. Articulate policies and procedures of the college to students.

11. Provide students with referral information for offices and services such as the Registrar, Admissions, Financial Aid, Business, Prior Learning Credit, Disabilities Services, Counseling, Academic Tutoring Centers, and other relevant resources.

12. Participate and complete QCC CAPS Training. Attend all staff meetings and information sessions.

13. Read pertinent QCC publications and advising and career planning literature including web, print publications, and information from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and NCDA (National Career Development Association).

14. Acquire and demonstrate an understanding of the professional work environment by observing timeliness and preparation for scheduled assignments, working cooperatively with others, presenting oneself as a role model for students and others, and by demonstrating dependability and flexibility.

15. Participate in yearly evaluation regarding performance of duties.

16. Actively support the teaching and learning process; practicing honesty and integrity in and out of the classroom; strive to create and support a student-centered environment while fostering academic innovation and excellence.

17. Work actively with other areas of the college to ensure a spirit of college wide collaboration, collegiality, civility, and teamwork. Respect the function of dissent in an academic institution while advancing a collegial atmosphere of campus collaboration.

18. Embrace the ideals of diversity and inclusiveness and support the equal rights of all people by advancing the understanding and appreciation of differences including age, race, gender, ability, religious convictions, socio-economic status, ethnic heritage, or sexual orientation.

19. Provide flexible, responsive and high quality service to all, be they students, community, or staff, and continuously assess processes and procedures and revise accordingly.

20. Perform other duties as assigned


Additional Information:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s Degree or Master’s degree in progress in education, counseling, psychology or closely related field.

2. A minimum of three years’ experience in academic advising and/or career counseling within an educational setting.

3. Experience with computer-based student record and information systems

4. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and comparable software applications

5. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bilingual (fluency in one or more of the following languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Portuguese or Albanian).

2. Experience in a community college setting.

3. Strong oral and written communication skills.

4. Prior experience in providing services to diverse student populations.

5. Career Development Facilitator (“CDF”) certificate.


SALARY/HOURS:


Salary is competitive and commensurate with MCCC salary schedule. Minimum starting salary is $52,564. Actual starting salary will be based upon such factors as education and experience per the MCCC rating structure. Full benefits package. Position is 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
